Parque Nacional El Rey (English version)

EL REY NATIONAL PARK

General characteristics

El Rey National Park was created in 1948, in order to preserve part of the Yungas ecosystem (rainforest), and its transition with the Chaco (woodland).

This region represents the southern limit in the distribution of this type of forests, which extends from Venezuela to the Argentine province of Catamarca.

El Rey National Park, located in the Department of Anta (Salta province, Argentina), protects 44,162 hectares of Yungas. The altitude of this protected area ranges from 700 to 2300 meters above the sea level.

History

In the 18th Century El Rey National Park was an agricultural farm, where cattle raising and logging where the main activities. Colonel Fernández Cornejo y Rendón was given this farm by the Spanish Crown in recognition of his work. The parks owes its name to these events.

Climate

The climate is subtropical, with a marked seasonal variation. 80% of the rainfall occurs during the wet season (November-March), with an annual average of 1500 mm in the mountains, and a smaller amount at a lower altitude.

The average temperatures are 21º C in summer, and 8º C in winter (with occasional frosts).

Access to the park

The park is accessible by car through the national road number 9, then the 34 to Lumbreras, and the 5 (as if you were going to General Pizarro), until you get to Paso de la Cruz (roads 5 and 20 intersection).

You can get to the park and camp for free (no fees apply). You can visit the park at any time; no permits are required. However, make sure the road is in good conditions before getting into El Rey.

There the road number 20 leads to the park through a gravel way that crosses several streams (fords), where it is advisable to have a four wheel drive vehicle (during the wet season), or at least a truck (during the dry season, to cross safely the streams).

From Paso de La Cruz to the park entrance the distance is 35 km. 10 km ahead is located the Intendencia (head office), camping, houses and trailheads.

The park is located about 90 km away from Las Lajitas, 110 km from Metán, and 180 km from Salta (capital).

NOWADAYS (December 2013), THE WET SEASON HAS BEGUN, SO THE ACCESIBILITY TO EL REY NAT. PARK DEPENDS ON WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS. A 4WD VEHICLE COULD BE REQUIRED. PLEASE ASK FOR PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION IN OUR OFFICE LOCATED IN SALTA BEFORE GOING OUT, AND ALSO BEAR IN MIND THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO CROSS STREAMS (FORDS) ON THE WAY TO THE PARK.

Means of transport

There are no regular means of transport to the park. To get there it is necessary to have a vehicle, rent one or get an excursion organized by one of our authorized tour operators (travel agencies legally allowed to take visitors to the park).

Lodging

There is just a free camping area, with cold showers only. Drinking water is available. Locally-generated electricity is supplied approximately from 7 to 10 PM.

You can rent a tent or sleeping bag in Airelibre, Alberdi 330, Salta capital (http://www.airelibresalta.com.ar/), phone 4220550.

The park does not have any other type of accommodation.

Food supply

There are no supermarkets nor kiosks in the park, so it is necessary to buy food and any other type of goods before getting into the area. Be aware of the fact that the nearest towns are located almost 100 km away from the park.

Activities

The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities such as trails ranging from 2 to more than 10 km, with different degrees of difficulty.

It is wise to spend at least a couple of days to see the park features.

Brochures and general information are available at the office in Salta city. Park rangers can give you advice on recreational alternatives within the protected area.
